Honors-In-Discipline: Admission, Progression and Retention

Students apply for the HID program during the first semester of nursing courses and are admitted the second semester of the BSN program.  Admission is based on overall grade point average, nursing grade point average, an application, a 1-2 page essay and 2 letters of support (at least one from a CON faculty member).

The CON Student Affairs Committee has determined that all applicants must have at least the following grade point averages to be considered for the HID program and to remain in good standing:

  • An overall college GPA of at least 3.2
  • College-level nursing GPA of at least 3.5 (including nursing courses taken at other colleges and universities)

In addition to a student’s academic ability, the Student Affairs Committee considers the student’s leadership potential and writing ability in selecting new HID scholars.  After reviewing applications and associated documents, the Student Affairs Committee recommends a limited number of applicants for admission.  The number of students admitted to the HID program is limited by the availability of College of nursing resources including faculty mentors.  Usually, no more than 10% of any nursing class is admitted to the program.  Students are notified of admission by mail or e-mail.

To remain in good standing in the CON HID program requires that HID students meet all program requirements and maintain both an overall GPA of at least 3.2 and a nursing GPA of at least 3.5.  If either GPA falls below the acceptable level, the student has one semester to recover the GPA.  A student who fails to restore the GPA to an acceptable level will be withdrawn from the CON HID program and will lose the Honors scholarship or out-of-state fee waiver.

Honors-in-Discipline Requirements

Students selected for the HID program enroll in FCNU 4008-001 Honors Mentorship in Nursing.  Honors Mentorship in Nursing meets for an hour seminar once per month to discuss pertinent aspects of nursing research.  Each student chooses a faculty mentor who guides the student through the research process ending with an Honor Thesis during the final semester of the nursing curriculum.  Students are simultaneously enrolled in one honors-enhanced nursing course during the first, second and third semesters of the program.  Graduating seniors are enrolled in a three-credit course to complete their theses.
