Curriculum Update Information

As most of you are aware the College of Nursing underwent a curriculum change effective Spring 2007.  This change was initiated after careful discussions with faculty and students in order to offer a curriculum that was more student-friendly.  The following changes may affect you in the Spring semester:

Sophomores 2nd Semester
ALNU 3016 (3 hours) will become ALNU 2016 (4 hours) for those second sophomore students who have not taken Human Physiology.

Juniors 1st Semester
ALNU 3020 (3 hours) and ALNU 3021 (4 hours) will become ALNU 3030 (3 hours) and ALNU 3031 (4 hours).  The names and numbers have been changed and your advisors will permit you into these courses so you should see them on your Goldlink screen.

Juniors 2nd Semester
FCNU 3040 (3 hours), FCNU 3050 (3 hours), FCNU 3051(9 hours), and  PMNU 3070 (2 hours) in the old curriculum were divided into three separate theory courses and one huge clinical course.  In the new curriculum the nine hour clinical course has been broken down into three separate clinical courses FCNU 3071 (3 hours), FCNU 3081 (3 hours) and PMNU 3091 (3 hours).  To remember the numbers think that first you must have the baby (3071), then you have a child (3081) and then you lose your mind (3091) J.  This separation keeps a student from have a terrible G.P.A. if you do not do well in one of the courses.  Instead of nine hours of a grade of C you might only have 3 hours.  The corresponding courses are FCNU 3070 ( 3 hours), FCNU 3080 (3 hours) and PMNU 3090 ( 3 hours).  The PMNU 4070 ( 1 hour) course has been dropped from the new curriculum but some of you who only had a two hour psych course will have to take it to graduate with enough nursing hours.

Seniors 1st Semester
ALNU 4000 (3 hours), ALNU 4020 (3 hours), and ALNU 4021 (6 hours) have been rearranged to become two separate courses with their own clinicals.  So that the adult and older adult will officially be separated and more accurately reflect the amount of time spent in the clinical area.  Students have voiced the necessity to have more clinical hours in medical surgical nursing so the additional hours in the new courses meets that request.

The names and numbers of the new courses are ALNU 4040 Care of the Adult (4 hours),

ALNU 4041 Care of the Adult Practicum (4 hours), ALNU 4050 ( 3 hours) Care of the Older Adult ( 3 hours), and ALNU 4051 Care of the Older Adult Practicum ( 3 hours).

We want to ensure that you get credit for the time spent in clinical and that you get enough exposure to the clinical area that you will be a confident practitioner upon graduation.

We hope you appreciate that a lot of thought from both faculty and students went into the changes to make our curriculum more student friendly.  We have eliminated the disastrous first semester course load that was a flunk out semester for so many students by having students take Pathophysiology in the second semester sophomore year.

While your advisors are fully aware of the changes, we are posting the transition plans on the nursing website under baccalaureate in nursing program so that you can track your progression until graduation.  If you have questions please contact your advisors or I would be happy to answer any questions that you might have.  I can be reached at 423-794-8369.
