RN-BSN Admission Criteria

Admission Criteria:

  • Must be fully admitted to ETSU
  • Must make a separate application to the College of Nursing by the deadline date and present a minimum 2.60 college level grade point average (GPA), on all college-level course work. Developmental studies grades/quality points will not be used in the calculation of the GPA for admission purposes.
  • Must have earned a minimum grade of "C" (2.0) in each required science, health science, and nursing course. No more than two science/health science courses may have been repeated, and only one science/health science course may have been repeated more than once in order to achieve a minimum grade of "C" (2.0).
  • Must be a graduate of an NLN accredited registered nurse diploma or associate degree program.
  • Hospital diploma graduates and graduates of non-NLN accredited associate degree programs must also present a minimum of 35 semester hours of college credits. Course work must include: English composition -6 semester credits; Natural Sciences - 8 semester credits; Behavioral/Social sciences - 6 semester credits; General Education/electives - 15 semester credits. Credit may be earned by taking the courses from a regionally, accredited institution or by taking departmental challenge examinations or equivalency examinations such as the CLEP. Upon successful completion of PMNU 3120 Professional Community-Based Nursing, FCNU 2030 Health Assessment, and ALNU 3010 Pharmacology, the student will be awarded 39 semester credits in nursing: ALNU 3030, ALNU 3031, ALNU 4040, ALNU 4041, ALNU 4050, ALNU 4051, FCNU 3070, FCNU 3071, FCNU 3080, FCNU 3081, FCNU 3090 and FCNU 3091.
  • Must hold a Tennessee license in good standing as an RN or a license from a compact state. A notarized photocopy of the TN license must be submitted with the College of Nursing application.

Selection process:

  • Eligible RN/BSN students will be admitted to the Fall semester (deadline for application is June 1st, however, applications are accepted until classes are filled.)
  • Eligible applicants will be rank ordered by college level grade point average; admission will be offered to the top ranked applicants and may be limited by space availability. Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis.
  • Eligible applicants who are not admitted may apply for the next available class.

Transfer of college credits:

All nursing courses in which a grade of "C" (2.0) or higher was earned, will be transferred in as elective courses and will count as elective credit in partial fulfillment of the B.S.N. degree requirements. Non-nursing credits are transferred and evaluated according to the policies of East Tennessee State University.

Requirements which must be completed in order to fulfill university and/or college requirements for the B.S.N. degree:

  • Communication: 9 credits
    • Written composition (ENGL 1010 and ENGL 1020)
    • Oral communications (SPCH 1300 or 2300 or 2320);
  • Humanities and Fine Arts: 9 credits
    • Literature
    • Fine Arts
    • Humanities elective;
  • Social/Behavioral Sciences: 6 credits;
  • History: 6 credits (HIST 2010 and HIST 2020);History of Tennessee: 3 credits (HIST 2030), may be substituted for 3 credits of U.S. History.
  • All other non-nursing supportive courses (if not already completed): HSCI 2230/31 Microbiology w/lab; MATH 1530 Probability & Statistics, and CSCI 1100.
  • Completion of 120 total semester hours for the BSN.
  • Completion of all university requirements for bachelor's degree. Current requirements include, but are not limited to:
    • Students must satisfy a residency requirement of not less than two semesters during the junior and senior years, including the last full semester. This shall be a minimum of 30 hours. Not less than 12 semester hours may be counted as a semester of residence. Courses taken at ETSU off-campus centers are classified as residence credit.
    • A minimum of 50 semester hours of credit must have been completed in senior-level college or university. **

Students should consult the Undergraduate Catalog for specific requirements pertaining to bachelor degree requirements.

**The RN/BSN major requires 32 semester credits; these 32 credits will partially fulfill the university requirement of 50 semester credits having been completed in a senior-level college or institution. Therefore, an additional 18 semester credits must be completed at a senior-level college or university.
