A Message from the President
Welcome all to a new year for Epsilon Sigma Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau.
Spring time is upon us. This time of year always causes me to
reflect on both new and renewed growth. New crocus bulbs planted in fall
are peaking through the earth. Budding trees remind me of the renewal of
cyclical growth. The theme of renewal is one on which our chapter
thrives. We had many new inductees in the fall which continue our
chapter growth and renewal.
With this growth, my goal is to expand community outreach and increase
member activity. One event
for which we are proud is our involvement in the Alzheimer Association
community walk.
We
must also continue our quest for excellence. Student and member
scholarly activity is vital. We are pleased to be able to highlight some
of the student accomplishments at our next meeting April 1, 09 at the
ETSU College of Nursing. Nurturing students and colleagues to expand
scientific inquiry is essential. We are also proud to announce that we
provided a research grant for a doctoral student member. Scientific
exploration in nursing has positive impact on the practice of nursing
and informs patient care and our chapter is committed to this endeavor.
Sigma
Theta tau International also has many online opportunities to expand
networking via online community forums. Members may link to an area of
interest. Those communities include Social and Professional Networking
Groups, Community/Public Health Nursing Forum, Palliative/Hospice Care
Community, Capacity
Building for Nurses Midwives in Africa, Chronic Illness Consortium, Clinical Practice
Community, Educational Project Exploring the Complementarily of Nursing
and Healing Traditions,
Good
Work in Nursing Community, International Writing Collaboration,
Knowledge Sharing Community.
I would encourage our members to consider actively engaging one of these
communities.
In
conclusion, I want to invite all members to renew their interest and
participate in our chapter. Nursing scholarship and excellence are vital
to our profession. My two goals for the coming year are to highlight the
scholarship that our members and students develop and to increase
visibility of our impact on the community’s health. Emily Dickinson
reminds us of both spring and renewal when she wrote:
Hope
is the thing with feathers
That
perches in the soul…
I
have hope that this is our chapter’s time of renewal.
Sincerely,
- Jean
