As a benefit for students attending State Universities and Colleges, the State University & Community College System of Tennessee offers student health insurance plans to help cover health expenditures of eligible students in the university system. This coverage is offered system-wide through GM Southwest, and offers a variety of plans for individuals, an individual and a spouse, as well as family coverage.
Eligibility
All Domestic Students attending Universities in the State University and Community College System of Tennessee (this includes East Tennessee State University) are eligible to enroll in these health care plans.
Students must be enrolled at least half time (6 credit hours) to be eligible for coverage, except for those students who are physically and/or mentally disabled. Such a disability must be certified by a physician and prevent the student from enrolling in 6 Credit Hours.
Further insured students must actively attend class at least for the first 31 days after the date for which the coverage was purchased.
For those students who are enrolled at least half-time and degree seeking, internet/online classes do fulfill enrollment requirements as long as the insured individual actively attends classes. Home study, correspondence, and television courses do not meet eligibility requirements for the program. Dependents
Eligible students may also insure their dependents. Eligible Dependents are the spouse and unmarried children under 25 years of age who are not self-supporting. Alternative Coverage
For those individuals who may not meet the stated eligibility requirements, alternate coverage options can be arranged by calling 1-800-550-4870.
