User Services
  • Spyware
    • Spyware on my machine? So what?
    • Why should I be concerned about Spyware?
      • Deceptive functionality. Spyware often uses a classic "trojan horse" tactic--like a virus. It offers to synchronize your PC's clock or keep track of forms, but it is also doing other hidden things while you browse. These trojans can include keyloggers, spam generators and DDOS zombies.
      • Home page hijacking. Did you ever find that your home page was changed, or discover new sites in Favorites that you didn't add? It might be spyware.
      • Loss of privacy. Some spyware keeps track of the web sites you visit and sends that information back to the spyware vendor.
      • More advertising. Did you install a popup stopper but you are still getting popups? The ads you are getting may not be from the web site you are on, but from spyware.
      • Broken web sites. Spyware sometimes changes the actual content on a web page, and in the process it "breaks" the page. The page may not look correct, or you may get Javascript errors.
      • Reduced performance. Spyware uses up system resources, CPU time, memory, disk space, and Internet bandwidth, making your system slower.
      • System instability. Some spyware can taxes system resources and can cause system crashes, hangs, or other strange behavior.
      • Security risks. Some spyware has a built-in update feature that lets the spyware maker download and install new code to your system without your knowledge or approval.

User Services
    • Realities of spyware at ETSU
  • Tried to clean up - 450+ instances of 40+ types of spyware...too tanked to salvage.  Per xxxx - OK to reimage per xxxxx.  Re-imaged - user: xxxxxx / pw: xxxxx –

  • removed a ton of spyware with Ad-Aware & Spy Sweeper, he appeared also to have some sort of "trojan" on his computer, but McAfee wasn't picking up anything. Jim Ashe said he would force a password reset the next time the user logged on, in case his pw had been compromised.

  • Impressive spyware infestation. Installed, updated and ran AdAware & SB. Also scanned for viruses. No viruses, much spyware (incl VX2). Ran AAW in safe mode until it reported no further instances of spyware.

  • Installed and ran newer version of Spybot and Adaware SE. Removed over 680 instances of spyware.

  • This computer is overrun with spyware - Naviscope, Virtual Bouncer, LOP, Scratch & Win, SaveNow, Gator, just to name a few.  Ran Adaware and cleaned all instances found.  Installed McAfee 7.0 and ran full scan - cleaned and quarantined several viruses.

  • Another new one - something called VirtuMondo.  McAfee found it but wouldn't clean or delete it.  Tried deleting the file (in Safe Mode) in the Local Settings/Temp dir but it got put right back in there.  Found a line in registry to run sysupd.exe, deleted it, rebooted and McAfee didn't scream again - hope that got it.

  • Went by and checked the computer. The virus scanner had been dsiabled by a trojan. Uninstalled and reinstalled McAfee 8.0 and ran virus scan. Removed 6 trojans. Ran spybot and removed 31 instances of spyware. Edited the registry to remove junk . Tested OK.

  • cleaned up new adaware record 2300+

  • Lots of spyware, removed most but it will require reimage to make it run correctly.
