Services

ATS offers a variety of services designed to support faculty and staff with their technological needs.

Open-enrollment Workshops

Each semester, ATS offers dozens of workshops designed to provide participants training in the technology they need to work successfully in a twenty-first century university environment. From Microsoft Office applications to the Blackboard course management system, from web design to digital media creation, from multimedia classroom training to the difficulties and advantages of teaching online, we probably offer what you have been looking for. If not, let us know what you would like to see us offer, and if demand warrants, we will create a workshop on the topic, or suggest other ways that we can help you receive the training you need (such as cohort training, see below). At the beginning of each new term we post a list of the upcoming workshops for that semester, and throughout the semester we may add new workshops to the schedule as they are warranted, so check back often.

Our workshops are intended primarily for faculty and staff. However, graduate students with teaching responsibilities and those working on projects for faculty mentors may also take the workshops when space permits. While we try to offer enough workshops to satisfy demand, in the event that a workshop is filled beyond capacity graduate students may have to yield their spots to faculty or staff.

Cohort Workshops (“The Fab Four” Workshops)

Sometimes our workshop schedule just doesn’t fit with your schedule. If you can find at least three friends who would also like the same training, we will schedule a cohort workshop for your group (making you the “Fab Four”). Cohort workshops can be scheduled at your location or in our labs, and can be specialized for the group. They do not necessarily need to be on subjects that we offer in open-enrollment workshops. For example, a department recently requested and received cohort training on digitizing paper documents. In fact, cohort training is a great way for departments to keep their members current on new technology.

Consulting and One-on-One Training

The staff of ATS will also consult with faculty and staff on projects involving the university’s mission. We can offer guidance, technological information, and appropriate assistance. We can offer, for instance, consultations on database design, equipment purchases, and on revamping course materials to take advantage of emerging technologies. To request a consultation, please email or call our offices.

Multimedia Classroom Training

East Tennessee State University has begun a multi-year process of converting most of its classrooms to state-of-the-art facilities with access to the internet and the equipment to deliver multimedia content. The staff of ATS provides training for these rooms and serves as a liason between the faculty and the technicians and planners who design and implement the rooms. ATS offers multiple sessions of Multimedia Classroom Training in the weeks before each semester. Individualized or small group training can also be arranged at other times as well.

To request a training session after the semester begins:
Because we do not have unrestricted access to classrooms for training once classes begin, arranging for Multimedia Classroom Training is more difficult during the semester. We are still happy to offer our services, but we need you to help. If you would like to receive Multimedia Classroom Training while classes are in session please follow the procedure below.

  1. Contact the Registrar's Office (Judy Harrell, 439-6891) to reserve the room for which you would like training (usually the room in which you are teaching, although if that is not possible we can tell you what other rooms would be suitable given the equipment that is installed). Find a time when both you and the room are free.
  2. Contact the ATS office with the above information (439-8611, or ATS@etsu.edu). We will arrange for one of our staff to meet you in the classroom at the designated time for training. Please provide 48 hours notice so that we can arrange our schedules. DON'T FORGET TO CONTACT ATS. If you reserve a room with the Registrar's office we have no way of knowing you want training unless you contact us.

Equipment

Our training lab and other equipment are available, as time and space permit, for use by faculty and staff who do not have access to such equipment in their own offices. We offer access to a wide variety of software packages and hardware such as digital cameras, scanners, a professional cd burner, dvd burners, and a video recorder and capture hardware. Please contact our offices to see about reserving the equipment.
