One very common cable question is "Why Can’t I Get Channels Over 13?"
Cable channels and “broadcast” channels share the same frequency plan for channels 2 through 13. However, for channels 14 and above they are different. The TV/VCR must be told if it is hooked up to
cable or antenna. There are two methods: menu and switch. The early version of cable ready sets used a switch that would be labeled “ANT/CATV”,
“NORM/CABLE”, etc. This switch typically would be located in the
front of TV/VCR at the bottom, or in the rear near the cable
hook up connector. The newer cable ready sets use the menu to
set up antenna or cable along with other set ups like color,
tint, brightness etc. Some are under the heading of “input”.
Most of these functions are performed with the remote, but some
sets have a “menu” button on the front of the TV/VCR. When
TV/VCR’s are moved, or after they have been cleaned or dusted,
the switch can be inadvertently set to the wrong position. When
the TV/VCR has been unplugged or there has been a power outage,
many TV/VCR’s will need to be reprogrammed to receive cable
channels above 13. Refer to your owner’s manual for further
details. If a VCR is hooked up, both TV and VCR need to be set
up for cable TV.
