ETSU uses the Meridian Mail Voice Messaging System.
Voicemail is optional on all university telephones at no cost. The following is a list of commands designed to help guide you
through some of the basic voicemail functions. If you have
any questions regarding voicemail usage that are not posted
here, or if you would like to set up voicemail on your extension
please email the OIT
helpdesk or call 439-4648 for further assistance.
Logging In the First Time
The first time you log into the voice messaging system, your
password will be 12345. You will be prompted to enter a new password
the first time you log into the messaging system.
Log In
To log into the Meridian Mail voice messaging system, either
press the Message key on your digital phone, or:

Dial 9-4201 on campus or 439-4201 from off campus.

At the prompt, enter your five-digit extension number,
followed by the # key.

Enter your password, followed by the # key.
Changing your
Password
-
While logged in to voice messaging, press 8 4.
-
At the prompt, enter a new password, press #. Your
password may be from 5 to 16 numbers long.

Enter the new password again, then press #.
-
Enter your old password again, then press #.
Personal verification
records your name and other details, such as your title or
extension number. Your personal verification is used in
your greetings and outgoing messages, in name dialing, and in
remote notification announcements.
To record a personal verification:

While logged in to voice messaging, press 8 9.
-
Press 5 to record. Wait for the tone, then record
your name and, if you wish, your title or extension number.

Press # to end the recording.

When you have finished recording, you can play your name
and re-record it if you wish.

To play your name, press 2.
-
To re-record, press 5 to record while at the beginning
of your name. Record your name and press # to end the
recording.
Recording your
Greeting
Callers from outside the university hear your external
greeting; callers from within the university hear your internal
greeting. All callers hear your temporary absence
greeting, if you record one.
To record your greeting:

While logged in to voice messaging, press 8 2.

Press 1 for external greeting. Press 2 for
internal greeting. Press 3 for temporary greeting.

Press 5 to record. Wait for the tone before you
start to speak.

Press # to end the recording.
-
When you have finished recording, you can play the
greeting, re-record it, delete it, set the expiry date for a
temporary greeting, or exit.

To play the greeting you recorded, press 2.

To re-record the greeting, press 5 while at the
beginning of the greeting. Record the new greeting and
press # to end the recording.

To delete one of your greetings, press 7 6 at the
greeting. (You cannot delete the standard system
greeting.)

To set the expiry date for your temporary greeting,
press 9. Enter the month, day, and time, pressing #
after each entry. For the current month or day, press
# only. For the standard expiry time of 12:01 a.m.
with any future date, press # for time.

To exit, press 4.
Playing your Messages
If you have a digital phone, a message-waiting light will
indicate that you have new messages. If you have an analog
phone, you will hear a special dial tone when you pick up the
handset. When you play your messages, new messages play
first, followed by previously played messages.
To play your messages:

After logging in, listen to the mailbox summary.

Press 2 to play the message. While the message is
playing, you can perform the following functions:
-
Skip back -- press 1.
-
Skip forward -- press 3.
-
To play the message faster, press 2 3; to play the
message slower, press 2 1.

Pause -- press #; to continue press 2.
-
Go to the next message -- press 6.
-
Go to the previous message -- press 4.
-
Go to a specific message -- press 8 6, (message number),
and #.
-
Delete a message, press 7 6.
-
You can restore a deleted message (with the current
session only) by pressing 7 6 again.
Once you have hung up the receiver, the message cannot be
restored.
Forwarding Messages
You can forward a message to another mailbox, to a
distribution list, or to a person with no voicemail. You
can also record an introduction to the original message.
To forward a message:

After hearing the message, press 7 3 to forward.

Enter the mailbox number, phone number, or distribution
list to which you want to forward the message, then press
#. Repeat this step for any other mailbox numbers,
phone numbers, or distribution lists. End by pressing
#.

To record an introduction, press 5, wait for the tone,
then speak. End the recording by pressing #.

To send the message, press 7 9.
Assigning a
customer operator
You can set up your voice mailbox to connect callers to
another number. This allows you to offer your callers the
option of leaving a message or speaking to one of your
assistants or colleagues.
In your greeting, you can tell callers to press zero after
the tone if they wish to speak to someone in your absence.

While logged in to voice messaging, press 8 0 for
mailbox options.

Press 1 to change the number.
-
Enter the new custom operator number, then press #.
Composing Messages
You can compose a message to one or more people or
distribution lists, and send it when you are ready. You
address your message before recording it.

While logged in to voice messaging, press 5 7 to compose
a message.

Enter the first address (mailbox number or distribution
list number), then press #. Continue to enter numbers
followed by # until you have finsihed, then press # again.

Press 5 to record. Wait for the tone, then record
your message. End the recording by pressing #.

To send the message, press 7 9.
To cancel the last mailbox number or distribution list
number you entered, press 0 #. Repeat this step for each
number you want to cancel, erasing entries one at a time.
After you have pressed the final #, you cannot cancel any
numbers.
Distribution Lists
You can create up to nine personal distribution lists, each
containing up to 99 entries. To create a personal
distribution list:

While logged in to voice messaging, press 8 5.

Enter a number from 1 to 9 to identify this list, then
press #.

Press 5 to create the list.
-
Enter the first mailbox number (five-digit extension),
then press #. To delete a number or name after you
enter it, press 0 #.

When the list is complete, press #.
To play, edit, or delete a personal distribution list:
-
Press 8 5.
-
Enter the distribution list number, then press #.
-
Press 2 to play the list.
-
Press 5 to add numbers. Enter each number, then
press #. When the list is complete, press #.

Press 6 to find a number in the list. Enter the
number, then press #. If the number is in the list,
you can delete it by pressing 7 6. If the number is
not in the list, you can add it by pressing 5.

To delete and entire list, press 7 6. You can
restore it by pressing 7 6 again immediately after deleting
it.

To exit, press 4.
