OVERVIEW
ETSU provides a wide variety of computing facilities for its
students. The purpose of this handbook is to help familiarize
instructors with those resources and how they can be used
in a teaching environment. There three main objectives that
Computer Services
strives to meet in providing student resources.
Each objective carries a different set of needs.
The first of these is general student use (i.e. students who
wish to use computers for purposes not directly related to
computer classes or assignments). Such things as writing term
papers, conducting research and preparing/presenting data
in various forms fall into this category. Many students, once
they have completed basic computer literacy will go on to
use computers as a tool for other classes whether these particular
classes entail the use of computers or not. In this area,
the largest demand is for word processing, graphics/spreadsheet
software and internet
access .
The second major objective is to provide for students completing
assignments which REQUIRE the use of computers. Most of this
usage is generated by those classes which use the labs as
classrooms. This type of usage involves larger numbers of
students who need to complete the same or similar assignments
at the same time. This is a major source of lab usage peaks
(sudden and dramatic increases in lab usage).
The third objective is to provide instructors with modern
teaching facilities utilizing computers directly in the classroom.
Instructors can, through proper procedures, request to reserve
a computer lab for the purpose of teaching a class in
that lab.
In terms of resources available to provide for these objectives,
Computer Services provides all equipment, software,
management, supplies and support staff for 4 computer labs
as well as providing network access, software and technical
management for some departmental or specialized labs. Three
of the four labs are available as classrooms. This breaks
down as two PC based labs and one Macintosh lab which can
be used as classrooms. The fourth lab is NOT available as
a classroom. It is left as an "open" lab available to any
student during normal operating hours. This lab provides students
with a place to work while other labs have classes in session.
Classroom labs are also available to any student when they
are not directly in use for classes.
Operating hours for each lab are also posted outside the labs.
Our largest facilities are open most nights until 2 a.m. with
exceptions on Friday and Saturday nights (typically low usage
times given the social life of the average college student).
Smaller labs with lower usage will have curtailed hours. Computer
Services expends maximum effort to insure consistent lab hours,
however, due to our extensive use of students as lab staff
instructors should be aware that occasions arise where labs
must be closed with little or no notice.
