Connecting to an ETSU Wireless Access Point:
From an ETSU Computer
Introduction:
ETSU is in the process of implementing
wireless access points in strategic areas throughout
campus. If you have a wireless adapter (wireless card) in
your computer, you will be able to connect to the ETSU
network via a wireless connection. Security for all ETSU
Wireless Access Points is enabled by PEAP (Protected
Extensible Authentication Protocol).
If you are connecting to an ETSU
wireless access point with your personal computer, please
use the connection instructions for NON-ETSU computers.
If you are using an ETSU owned
computer, please use the following instructions to connect
to the ETSU wireless network.
Windows XP Systems:
- Click on Start, Control
Panel, then Network Connections.
- Right mouse click on the
wireless network connection and select Properties.

- Click on the Wireless Networks
Tab. All of the Wireless Access Points will be
named “ENCRYPTED”. Highlight Encrypted and click
on configure.

- In the Configure Dialogue Box, put
a check in the box on both the Data Encryption
(WEP enabled) box and the Key is provided for me
automatically box. After this, click on the
“Authentication” tab:

- Check the box
adjacent to “Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for
this network.”
- Select PEAP type as EAP
type.
- Check the box
adjacent to “Authenticate as computer when computer
information is available”.
- Click “OK” to save
information

- Click on the “Advanced”
tab of the Wireless Network Connection Properties. Do
NOT check any boxes under the “Advanced”
tab.
- Click OK to save the
information.

- When the wireless card is enabled
and a signal to an Access Point is available, the
following window will appear for user authentication:

- Enter your Active Directory
username and your Active Directory password.
This is the same as your ETSU email username and
password.
- The Domain is ETSU
- Authentication to the
network will take approximately 15 seconds.

Connecting to an ETSU Wireless Access Point:
from a NON-ETSU
Computer
Please note that any “non-ETSU” wireless configuration may
change according to the type of wireless card.

available to ETSU students, faculty, and staff. If you have
a wireless adapter (wireless card) in your computer, you
will be able to connect to the ETSU network via a wireless
connection. Security for all ETSU Wireless Access Points is
enabled by PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication
Protocol).
If you have an ETSU computer, please
see the connection instructions for ETSU computers.
If you are trying to connect to an ETSU
wireless access point with your personal computer, please
use the following instructions.
Windows XP Systems:
- Click on Start, Control
Panel, then Network Connections.
- Right mouse click on the
wireless network connection and select Properties.

- Click on the Wireless Networks Tab.
- The wireless access point will be
named ETSU.
- In the Preferred networks
window, highlight ETSU and click Properties.

- In the ETSU properties diaglogue
box, be sure the Network Authentication field
says Open.
- The Data encryption should
be set to WEP.
- Place a check in the box by The
key is provided to me automatically.
- Then click the Authentication
tab:

- Place a check in the box by
Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network.
- Select Protected EAP (PEAP)
as the EAP type.
- Place a check in the box by
Authenticate as computer when computer information is
available.
- Then click the Properties
Button

- Uncheck the Validate
server certificate box.
- Then click the Configure Button.

- Uncheck the box by
Automatically use my Windows logon name and password
(and domain if any).

- Click OK.
- Click OK again.
- Click the Advanced tab of
the Wireless Network Connection Properties, make
sure that there are no checks in the boxes.
- If the checkboxes are grayed out,
but the boxes are checked, click the box above it (Allow
other network users to connect through this computer’s
Internet connection), then
uncheck
Allow other network users to control or disable the
shared Internet Connection.
- Then
uncheck
Allow other network users to connect through
this computer’s Internet connection.
- Click OK to save the
information.

- If your wireless card is enabled
and you have signal to an Access Point, you should get
the following window:

- Enter your Active Directory
Username and your Active Directory password this is your
ETSU username and password (email username and
password).
- Enter ETSU as the domain name.
- It will take about 15 seconds and
then you should be logged into the access point. You may
need to reboot the computer and log back into your
domain account for the connection to work.
