Follow the instructions that were provided with your Ethernet Card to install the card and the necessary drivers on your computer.  If you experience difficulty installing the card, contact Technical Support for your card—contact information can be located on the cards enclosed documentation.  ETSU cannot assist you with the physical installation of your card.

Step 2

Locate the blue Ethernet Jack in your room and plug one end of the Ethernet Patch Cable into the wall and the other end into the Ethernet Card on the back of your computer.

Step 3

Start and select Settings, then Control Panel:

From the Control Panel, double click on the Network icon.

NOTE:  Your screen may look slightly different.

Step 5

Check to see if TCP/IP is one of the selections in the network dialog box shown below.  If it is, go to

Step 9.  If not, proceed to the next step.

NOTE:  You might have a different Ethernet Card than the one shown below. figure 3

Add 'Client for Microsoft Networks'.

NOTE:  Your screen may look different than the one below.

Step 7

Click on Protocol, then click Add.

Step 8

Select Microsoft, then click TCP/IP on the right hand side.  Click OK.

Step 9

Click on TCP/IP, then click Properties.

Click on the radio button  beside: 

'Obtain an IP address automatically' then click OK.

Step 11

Click on the Identification tab.

Step 12

Enter your Computer Name.

NOTE:  All of the computer names on the network must be unique.  We recommend you use your ETSU E-Mail ID (aka Z ID).

For this example we are using the following Z ID:  ZPEP1

In the Workgroup field, type 'ETSU'

Click OK.

Step 13

If your computer asks for your Windows CD, insert it in the CD-ROM drive and press OK.  If your computer does not ask for the CD, proceed to the next step.

Step 14

Click Yes and wait for the computer to shutdown and restart.  DO NOT turn off the machine during this process.

Step 15

When your computer reboots you should be on the network.  Double click on the Internet Explorer icon on your desktop and begin surfing.

Configuring your computer to access ETSU's network

Before you can configure your computer to access ETSU’s network, you will need the following:

1.  10/100 Ethernet Card

2.  Category 5  RJ-45  Ethernet Patch Cable

(The ETSU Bookstore has Ethernet Cards available for $24.99 and 10’ Patch Cables for $6.99—these items are also available from local retail stores such as OfficeMax, Office Depot, and Circuit City)

Step 1
