Connecting to an ETSU Wireless Access Point: Using Your Dell Axim 50 PDA

Note: If you have an Axim X5, please see the Axim X5 setup instructions.

Introduction:

ETSU is in the process of implementing wireless access points in strategic areas throughout campus. If you have a wireless adapter (wireless card) in your Dell Axim, you will be able to connect to the ETSU network via a wireless connection. Security for all ETSU Wireless Access Points is enabled by PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol).

  1. You will either need to download the file entitled root.ca or accept the beamed file from another PDA. You will need to download and sync the file to your File Explorer folder. **You will not be able to connect to a Wireless Access Point using your PDA without the root.ca certificate**
  2. There should be a folder on your PC that contains files and folders to sync with your PDA. If you did not change the defaults when setting up your PDA, the folder is probably entitled Pocket_PC My Documents, or some similar title, and is usually located in the My Documents folder on your computer. There should be a shortcut to the folder on the Desktop.
  3. Download the root.ca file to your Pocket_PC folder and then sync your PDA with your computer.
  4. Please locate root.ca located in your file explorer directory, and rename it to rootca.cer.

  5. Double clicking the rootca.cer file through file manager imports the file into the correct spot

  6. Click “YES” to install the certificate in the correct folder.
  7. Close this window and Go to start, settings, then connections. You will get the following window:

  15. Now click on the “802.1X” Tab and you will get the following window:

  16. Make sure there is a check in the “IEEE 802.1x Network Access Control”
  17. “PEAP” should be chosen for the “EAP TYPE”.
