Connecting to an ETSU Wireless Access Point: Using Your Dell Axim X5 PDA

Note: If you have an Axim 50, please see the Axim 50 setup instructions.

Introduction:

ETSU is in the process of implementing wireless access points in strategic areas throughout campus. If you have a wireless adapter (wireless card) in your Dell Axim, you will be able to connect to the ETSU network via a wireless connection. Security for all ETSU Wireless Access Points is enabled by PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol).

  1. You will either need to download the file entitled root.ca or accept the beamed file from another PDA. You will need to download and sync the file to your File Explorer folder. **You will not be able to connect to a Wireless Access Point using your PDA without the root.ca certificate**
  2. There should be a folder on your PC that contains files and folders to sync with your PDA. If you did not change the defaults when setting up your PDA, the folder is probably entitled Pocket_PC My Documents, or some similar title, and is usually located in the My Documents folder on your computer. There should be a shortcut to the folder on the Desktop.
  3. Download the root.ca file to your Pocket_PC folder and then sync your PDA with your computer.
  4. Go to Start, Programs, and double tap on the Dell Client:

    PDA Screen
  5. You should see the following Dell TM WLAN Card window:

    Dell WLAN Card
  6. Go to Advanced, View Certificates. The Certificates window pictured below should appear:

    Certificates
  7. Tap on the "Select a store" pull-down menu and select "Root." Then, tap the "Import" button. Tap the Folder pull-down menu to search for the "ROOT.ca" certificate. When you have located the file, click on the "ROOT.ca" certificate to import it. After this is done, you will see the following window:

    Certificate Imported
  8. Tap OK and scroll down to confirm that you have a certificate entitled "ETSU OIT." This certificate is needed to authenticate any PDA to an ETSU PEAP enabled Wireless Access Point. The window should look like the following:

    ETSU Certificate
  9. Tap okay to close this window and the window to the Dell Client.
  10. Go to Start, Settings, and then choose the tab at the bottom that says "Connections." You should see the following window:

    Settings
  11. Click on the "Wireless Ethernet" icon. You should see the following window:

    Configure Wireless Networks
  12. Double tap on the "ETSU" network to open the configuration settings. Make sure the Network Name is "ETSU" and "The Internet" is selected in the Connects to field.

    Configure Settings
  13. Tap on the "Authentication" tab in the bottom right to open the Configure Network Authentication window. Place a "check" in the "Data Encryption (WEP Enabled)" box. Place a "check" in the "The Key is provided for me automatically" box. Place a "check" in the "Enable network access using IEEE 802.1x box. Select "PEAP as the EAP type for the EAP protocol. Click OK to accept the changes.

    Configure Authentication
  14. You will be at the "Settings" page that shows "ETSU" in caps. If you hold the pen on the "ETSU" connection, you will get two choices:
    1. Connect
    2. Remove Settings
Please choose the "Connect" button by highlighting it. After you choose this button, you should see the following window:

    Network Log On
  15. Type in your ETSU username, your "network password" and ETSU for the domain (the same information that you would use to login to your computer or check your email.) Click "OK". The picture of 2 arrows and an X should change to 2 arrows after the connection is made.

**For the Dell Axims with a removable wireless card, you will need to disable the wireless card disabled when you do not want to "use" the wireless access point. If you do NOT do this, it will disconnect you from the access point for a 24 hour period. To disable the wireless card, click the two arrows and select "Turn Wireless Off."

**We have not tested the instructions on the Palm OS.**
