SETTING UP WIRELESS CARD FOR 802.1X AUTHENTICATION

Note: If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 and your connection drops frequently, forcing you to re-authenticate, your computer might have a known incompatibility. Microsoft has created a fix for this problem. Download and install the following file:
You can find more information about the patches contained within this installer on Microsoft's website.

The ETSU wireless network is available to ETSU students, faculty, and staff. If you have a wireless adapter (wireless card) in your computer, and the computer is within signal range, you will be able to connect to the ETSU network via a wireless connection. Security for all ETSU Wireless Access Points is enabled by PEAP (Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol).

NOTE: Only some locations on campus have access to the wireless network. To see which locations have wireless access, visit the ETSU Interactive Campus Map and check the "Wi-Fi Hotspots" box in the upper right-hand corner.

Right click on the wireless network connection icon in the system tray, select Open Network Connections, and right mouse click on the wireless network connection. Choose Properties.

On the Wireless Network Connection Properties box, Click on the "Wireless Networks" Tab. In the "Preferred networks" section, you may have several entries. Highlight "ETSU" and click on the "Properties" button:

On this tab, make sure the Network Authentication field says Open, and the Data encryption is set to WEP. The checkbox that says "The key is provided for me automatically" should be checked. After this, click on the "Authentication" tab:

Put a check in the "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network. Choose "Protected EAP (PEAP" for the EAP type. Put a check in "Authenticate as computer when computer information is available".

Click on the Properties button. You'll see this screen next: Uncheck the "Validate server certificate" box.

Click "OK" twice to save the information.

On the "Advanced" tab of the "Wireless Network Connection Properties", make sure that there are no checks in the boxes. If the box showing in gray (see graphic below) has a check in it, click in the box above it, then uncheck the "Allow other network users to control…", then uncheck the "Allow other network users to connect…". Click OK and save the information.

If your wireless card is enabled and your computer is receiving a wireless signal, you should get the following window: You will enter your ETSU username and password at this point. It will take about 15 seconds and then you should be logged into the wireless network. You may need to reboot the computer and log back into your ETSU account for the connection to work.
