Note: Although these instructions have been tested successfully on OS X
10.5 (Panther), they have also been tested unsuccessfully. It seems that support for 802.1x
authentication in Panther is dubious as of the writing of this document. We hope that Apple
will release a fix for 802.1x support in Panther. In the meantime, please be aware that
OIT has no information available that is not already on this web page. If you follow
these instructions but are still unable to connect (either intermittently or not at all), unfortunately
we cannot offer any further advice or assistance.
The following settings should get a Macintosh running OS X 10.5 (Leopard) to the ETSU wireless network.
1. Open System Preferences, select Airport, turn it on, then select the advanced settings button.
2. In the Advanced section, select the ETSU network, and the pencil icon to edit it.
3. Select LEAP security, and click the "add" button.
4. From there, go to the 802.1X tab, select the ETSU network, then enable 802.1X login, and check the
PEAP, LEAP and TTLS authentication.
5. When you login, the network will ask for a WEP password, which needs to be entered exactly in the below
format, including the < and > symbols and forward slash. It doesn't really make sense to us, either.
The username and password are the same as your e-mail or Desire2Learn login.
This is where most users have encountered problems. Entering correct username and password does not
always authenticate correctly. You may see an error indicating either a timeout, or invalid password.
OIT is investigating the problem. If you can’t connect, retry. If it doesn’t work, cancel and wait, and
your Mac may authenticate after a few minutes.
Once you have successfully connected to the ETSU network, the Status tab for Airport will tell you the
computer is authenticated by either LEAP or PEAP.
