The mission of Operation Heart

is to increase the awareness of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and the role that pharmacists, the public's most accessible healthcare provider, can play in the management and prevention of CVD. Through their participation in Operation Heart, student pharmacists will have the opportunity to interact with the patients in their communities in various capacities to educate them about and encourage lifestyle changes, monitor risk factors associated with CVD, and provide education about the importance of medication adherence.

Mini Bio:

Matt grew up in a small town in Middle Tennessee and graduated with Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Tennessee Technological University in Cookeville, Tennessee. After graduating, he served as an instructor for the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Hartsville, Tennessee for two years before deciding to pursue a career in pharmacy. He is a second-year student pharmacist who is involved in other APhA-ASP committees, TSSP, NCPA, and Phi Delta Chi Pharmaceutical Fraternity. In his spare time, Matt enjoys playing clarinet for the Johnson City Community Concert Band and spending time outdoors.

Outreach Projects:

• American Heart Association Heart Walk – For this event, the committee raised funds and awareness as well as participated in the day of the event.

• Holiday Heart Health – Operation Heart committee members developed recipes and tips for the holiday season and provided them to the community at blood pressure screening events.

• Red Dress Event – For Wear Red for Women Day, Operation Heart plans to raise funds for the AHA. As a reward for reaching our goal, the male faculty and staff have agreed to lecture in red dresses for one day.
