Current Gatton Pharmacy Students

Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy

Providing opportunities for professional and personal growth is important to us. Most students are active and engaged in one or more of these opportunities, including involvement in one of the many student organizations and fraternities; holding leadership positions in college organizations; attending professional meetings; providing service to the community; and involvement in social events. At Gatton, there is never a lack of extracurricular activities, whether it is participating in intramural sports, participating in the annual Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes and other service events; bowling with members of the faculty; or attending the Student Christmas party and annual Awards Night Banquet.

Professional Organizations

Career development is an important aspect of a professional education. These organizations offer many opportunities for professional growth and networking.

Fraternities

Extracurricular offerings include fraternities devoted specifically to the profession of pharmacy.  Unlike strictly social fraternities, pharmacy fraternities strive to advance the practice of pharmacy while also fostering a sense of community and spirit among members. Community service and philanthropy thrive in each pharmacy fraternity.

Honor and Leadership

Phi Lambda Sigma is known as the pharmacy leadership society.  It endeavors to support pharmacy leadership commitment by recognizing leaders and fostering leadership development.

Rho Chi Society is the only academic honor society for pharmacy.  Its mission is to encourage and recognize excellence in intellectual achievement and advocate critical inquiry in all aspects of pharmacy.

Leadership Opportunities

Class Officers – Class officers provide general leadership for their specific class, and serve as liaisons between the class and the administration of the College.

College Committees – Students are provided numerous opportunities to participate in the operation and leadership of the College through inclusion in the College’s committee structure. Students serve on the Admissions, Curriculum, Honor Code, Library, Student-Faculty Relations, and Technology committees, as well as the Student Life Advisory Board.

Organization Officers – Each student organization has elected officers which lead the operation and activities of the organization.

Ambassadors – A select group of students serve as the Gatton College of Pharmacy’s ambassadors. Ambassadors assist on applicant Interview Days and other official College events, give scheduled tours and communicate to matriculating students.

Research

The Gatton College of Pharmacy encourages students to become involved in research. During the second and third didactic years, students may take elective courses in “Pharmaceutical Science Research” and/or “Pharmacy Practice Research/Scholarship” to gain hands on experience while also earning academic credit.

Faculty members at the college have a variety of research backgrounds and experience, and research may include bench top work, clinical studies, and the scholarship of teaching. Students who complete research projects may have the opportunity to present research posters at regional or national meetings or publish the study findings in a national journal.
