Gatton College of Pharmacy Receives Candidate Status

JOHNSON CITY – The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) announced today that the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy at East Tennessee State University has been awarded Candidate Status.

According to ETSU Dean of Pharmacy Dr. Larry Calhoun, “Candidate Status” is the highest level of designation the university is eligible for at this time.  Full accreditation is only considered for pharmacy schools that have graduated their first class of students and have met other criteria.  ETSU will graduate its first class of pharmacy students in 2010.

“I congratulate the faculty, staff, and students at the Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy and the ETSU administration on this achievement, and I commend them for their role in directing the college to this point,” Calhoun said.  “Without a doubt, we have a team that is second to none.”

An ACPE evaluation team visited the ETSU campus in February 2008, and the board of directors made the decision to award Candidate Status at its meeting last week in Chicago.  As a result, students who graduate from the ETSU program will be eligible to take the licensing board examination to become registered pharmacists.

Dr. Wilsie Bishop, ETSU Vice President for Health Affairs and University Chief Operating Officer, said, “The review was very thorough, and receiving Candidate Status is a clear sign that the university is meeting the national standards for a developing pharmacy program.”

The third class of pharmacy students has been accepted and will begin classes this August.
