East Tennessee State University is part of the
Southeastern Association for Research
in Astronomy, which operates
a 0.9 meter telescope at
Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona.
This telescope, along with the
14-inch telescope at
the
Harry D. Powell Observatory near the ETSU campus,
is used for astronomical research by
the faculty and students of ETSU.
In addition to these two telescopes, ETSU astronomers also use a wide variety of other telescopes, including the Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE) , the telescopes of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, the Far-Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer, and the International Ultraviolet Explorer. ETSU Astronomers are also involved in theoretical projects on a wide range of topics, including the intergalactic medium, stellar atmospheres, and hot stars.
