SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES IN RESEARCH IN ASTRONOMY FOR TEACHERS
AT EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY
Summer 2008

OVERVIEW

This program is aimed at middle and high school teachers who are interested in getting some hands-on experience in scientific research in astronomy. The teachers will work one-on-one with a faculty mentor on an individual project. These projects will be tailored to the individual interests of the teacher. These projects may range from in-depth research projects on specific topics, to developing new laboratory exercises for use in their own classrooms.

Teachers will be paid an hourly stipend for their work. They will be expected to give a presentation at the end of the summer on their project, and to write a summary report. In some cases, the teacher's contribution may be incorporated into a larger paper to be published in a major astronomical journal.

Teachers who participated in the Summer 2004, 2005, or 2006 Workshops on Variable Stars at ETSU are eligible to participate in this new program, as are new teachers.

This program is sponsored by a NASA Education/Public Outreach grant.
