During this workshop, participants will:
- Learn how to set up and use the ETSU 8-inch Meade telescopes.
- Monitor variable stars using a charged-coupled device (CCD) camera.
- Determine stellar magnitudes from the CCD images, and derive light
curves for variable stars (as in the picture to the right).
- Review basic scientific concepts such as the nature of light,
the night sky, and stellar evolution in the light of science curriculum
standards.
- Image planets, the Moon, nebulae, clusters, and galaxies.
- Learn educational software that can be used in your own classroom.
- Submit their results to the
American Association of Variable Stars
Observers
archives, which will make the data available to astronomers
around the world.
