THE HARRY D. POWELL OBSERVATORY WORKSHOP
ON VARIABLE STARS
AT EAST TENNESSEE STATE UNIVERSITY
Summer 2007

OVERVIEW

This workshop is aimed at middle and high school teachers or undergraduate or graduate pre-teachers currently teaching or planning to teach the physical sciences. Participants will earn 2 hours of undergraduate or graduate credit (depending upon the status of the participant), and tuition and fees costs will be paid. Participants will receive materials, supplies, and software to carry back to their own classrooms. Participants will contribute to scientific research by submitting their results to the archives of the American Association of Variable Stars Observers.

The workshop will meet twice a week, Tuesday and Thursday evenings, for 5 weeks, from June 5 - July 5, 2007, at Powell Observatory. Each session will run 3 hours, from 8 PM - 11 PM. Indoor activities will be done until sunset; after sunset, if the weather permits, telescope observations will be made. On cloudy nights alternative indoor activities will be done.

This workshop is sponsored by a NASA Education/Public Outreach grant.
