March 2004
- Dr.
Wallace and Jerry Nave took a small group of ETSU students to Arkansas
over Spring Break to recover a dead alligator for study. Click here
for more on the story. The students got more than they bargained for...not
only did they get to view live alligators and collect fossils in the
Cretaceous deposits of Arkansas, but they were subjected to the
"joys" of salvaging a second dead alligator.
- Dr. Whitelaw led a crew to retrieve an intact
core from the Gray
Fossil Site. Crews reached a depth of approximately 119 feet before they
reached refusal (bedrock)!
- Interviews are well underway for the new
geology position. Please feel free to attend one of the many talks.
February 2004
- The molar of a Red Panda was discovered in
late January (2004) by Larry
Bristol (our Paleontology Coordinator). Dr.
Wallace and Dr. Xiaoming Wang identified the specimen as a member of the
Ailuridae (likely Parailurus). Click here
to read more about it, or go to the Gray Fossil Site web
page.
January 2004
- New Geology Hire - The department is
currently searching for a new faculty member. Our preference is for an
environmental or engineering geologist, but we will gladly consider any
outstanding geologist. Our hope is to conduct interviews in mid to late
February. Click here for the job
advertisement.
- Gray Fossil Site - Meetings with the
exhibit designers and architects have been fruitful. Sketches and artist's
renditions of the new museum will be available on the Gray Fossil Site web
page within a week or two.
December 2003
- Bachelor of Science in Geology - The
Strategic Plan has been submitted to have the geology concentration elevated
to a full (stand alone) BS. The goal is to have the program up and running
within 2 years.
More information to come soon...
