notice this very faint white streak across the sky? This is the Milky Way. This light comes from billions of distant stars, all crammed together in a pancake-shaped structure....the disk of the Milky Way. Now, take a closer look along the Milky Way. The dark blotches you see are big patches of dust and gas, sailing through space between us and the stars in the Milky Way, blocking our view of the Milky Way... just like the dust in the Horsehead Nebula blocks the light from the red nebula behind.
