Some of these objects are shown in these beautiful pictures from the Anglo-Australian Observatory. Some of these look like rings: others like butterflies. This objects----old stars that have gently blown off their outer layers--- are known as Planetary Nebulae. They are NOT called that because they have anything to do with planets, but simply because, years ago, when they were first discovered, astronomers thought that they looked like planets through their telescopes.
