These fingers are believed to be particularly DENSE parts of the clouds, where gravity is strong and the cloud is contracting. As these clouds get smaller and smaller, they heats up. This is because of the Law of Conservation of Energy---all the gravitational energy that the cloud loses by contracting has to go somewhere, and it goes into heat. The center gets so hot and so dense that finally nuclear fusion starts. The cloud has become a star!
