Connecting with Guidance Counselors

THIS SITE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Professors Richard Ignace and Gary Henson of the Department of Physics, Astronomy and Geology at East Tennessee State University are inviting Guidance Counselors from area secondary schools to participate in a short program to inform Counselors about educational and career opportunities in the sciences as a whole. The event is planned for Friday, November 12, 2:00 pm at ETSU, and will last for 2-3 hours. Speakers from several faculties in different science departments will describe educational and career opportunities in their respective fields, as well as discuss why they enjoy working in science and in fact what they do on a daily basis. This will be followed by a break with snacks, and the event will end with a period of open discussion and questions. The intended outcome is that Guidance Counselors will be better informed to assist students expressing an interest in the sciences with respect to educational and career prospects and requirements, such as the recommended secondary school curriculum, expected college curriculum, regional institutions and industries, and the advantages and disadvantages of pursuing post-undergraduate degrees. In all of this, Counselors will be able to convey this information with a better perspective of who scientists are and what they do, an objective that is clearly consistent with the standards and expectations for school-counseling programs in the state of Tennessee. A stipend of $25 will be made available to all attendees to defray personal costs for travel. Individuals interested in participating should contact the Departmental Executive Aide, Theresa Marlow, in the Physics Office by phone at (423)439-4231 by November 1st, please. Further information about speakers, directions, and parking can be found below.

Maps and parking information for ETSU can be found at the links below.

Directions: (if you have not been to the ETSU campus before)

Coming from the North on I-26: It is probably simplest to loop around Johnson City to arrive at ETSU. In this case take exit #36 from I-26 East. Bear right when exiting onto State of Franklin Rd. From the campus map at the link below, you can see State of Franklin at top. This road loops out around and back toward I-181, so that after many lights, you will be approaching ETSU from the left on this map.

Coming from the South on I-26: Take exit #31 for HWY 321. This is University Parkway and will take you to State of Franklin Rd. Refer to the campus map at the link below.

Parking: Before 3pm, you will need to get a visitor pass at building #64. So as you come down State of Franklin, turn right at the light for University Parkway. (At the website for the campus map, at lower left, is a link for a pdf map for campus parking lots.)
