The department of athletics will assist the university in becoming the best regional university in the country by developing a culture of excellence and creating a forum for celebrating the university's advancement, enhancing its image with prospective students and building relationships and pride among its students, faculty, alumni, and community.

The department of athletics strives for excellence as it develops the leadership capabilities of student-athletes in an environment that unites achievement in intercollegiate athletics competition with academic excellence, sportsmanship, and community service within the educational and social environment of East Tennessee State University .
