Graves grew up in western Iowa, and attended Iowa State University as an undergraduate.  He received his Masters Degree from the University of Wisconsin – Madison, where his primary focus of study was sculpture.  Before joining the faculty at ETSU, he had lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and worked at The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD). While at MIAD he taught adjunct and served as the Sculpture Departments lab technician for two years.
