Gear-Up

We are a community partnership grant between East Tennessee State University and Washington County Schools, located in upper East Tennessee (Johnson City/Jonesborough). GEAR UP Coordinators started the program in the four feeder schools for David Crockett High School, when our cohort was in the 6th and 7th grades. Our program is based on a case management intensive model wherein GEAR UP Coordinators work daily in DCHS, providing a range of services that address academic, social and cultural development and all of which are designed to promote readiness for undergraduate programs.

GEAR UP is in its seventh year, an extension of our sixth year, of service in Washington County Schools. Half of our cohort of students graduated in May 2011.

During our time at DCHS, GEAR UP has created several programs:

CRAM: ACT prep. CRAM was designed to help prepare juniors taking the ACT. DCHS teachers were employed by GEAR UP to teach the subject areas on the ACT. Students who met the guidelines of the program were eligible to go on an education field trip to Charleston, South Carolina which included leisure time at the beach.

Outdoor Classroom: The outdoor classroom was built by students for students. GEAR UP partnered with several Crockett vocational classes and members of the community for the completion of the classroom. The classroom equipment is run by solar power and is open for use by the faculty and staff of DCHS.

Summer Academy: Each summer GEAR UP plans a Summer Academy for students within the cohort. The academy objectives have varied from learning about different careers, rocketry and community service. During the last two summer programs, the focus has been on giving back to the community. The students were able to acquire a combined total of 40 hours if students attended both summer programs. A total of 40 hours coupled with a university path curriculum allows students to be Tennessee Scholars.

College Tours: Through the duration of the grant, students have been exposed to fifteen area colleges, universities and technical schools.

Transition Fair: GEAR UP started the first transition fair at DCHS for eighth graders preparing to enroll in DCHS. The transition fair is an opportunity for students and families to experience DCHS, have a tour, and meet teachers, upper classmen, clubs, sports and organizations that are available in the school.
