How to configure Windows NT 4.0 for the ETSU network

It may be helpful to print this file to use for reference as you proceed through the instructions. To print, click on the File menu item and select Print.

You will need your Windows NT 4.0 CD and Service Pack CD to complete this procedure.

It is recommend that you read these instructions thoroughly before you begin.

If you are uncomfortable performing these tasks, we recommended that you contact one of the vendors.

Step 1:

Plug the patch cable into the Ethernet card in the back of your computer, then connect the other end to the Blue jack on the wall. If you do not have a patch cable one, you may purchase one from one of the vendors.

Step 2:

From the Start menu, select Settings, then Control Panel to open the Control Panel dialog box.

Proceed to the next step


Step 3:

From the Control Panel, double click on the Network icon.

The icon should look like the one with the  arrow pointing toward it.

Then proceed to the next step


Step 4:

If Windows NT Networking is NOT installed, choose yes to install it. If it IS installed,

If you get an image like the one in Figure 4 jump to Go Here.

Step 5:

This is the next screen to open. Do nothing here, the system will update the screen automatically to the one in Figure 6.

Proceed to the next step


Step 6:

Click on the Start Search button so that NT will search for your network adapter.

Proceed to the next step


Step 7:

Your computer should now display the network adapter that results from the search. It may be different than the one shown in Figure 7.

Note: if the search did not find an adapter, we recommend that you contact one of the vendors.

Click on Next and proceed to the next step


Step 8:

This screen shows the default protocols install by NT.

Click on Next and proceed to the next step


Step 9:

Confirm that RPC Configuration is selected in the next window.

Click on Next and proceed.


Step 10:

The next window confirms that you are ready to install network components. Insert your Windows NT CD into your CD-ROM drive and choose Next.

If the path for the I386 directory, as shown in Figure 9 below, is not correct, you will need to change it.

Step 12:

The next screen confirms that you are installing the TCP/IP protocol. The installation process will pause and TCP/IP Setup window will be displayed. Choose Yes.

Step 14:

Windows NT will now finish copying network files. Choose Next in the next window.

Step 16:

In this step the Setup Wizard asks you to give your computer a name. We recommend that you use your ETSU e-mail address, since all computer names on the network must be unique. The value for  the workgroup is ETSU.

Choose Yes in the next window for your computer to restart.

When the machine reboots you should be on the network.

Double click on the THE INTERNET icon that is located on your desktop. Click on File, then Open.
