VI-5. The institution has adequate procedures for
addressing written student complaints and makes those available upon request
by the Commission.
JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE
Yes, East Tennessee State University is able to provide
a portfolio of evidence supporting compliance.
STATEMENT OF RATIONALE FOR JUDGMENT OF COMPLIANCE
At East Tennessee State University,
the process for receiving student complaints is consolidated in a university-wide
policy (Student Complaint Policy and Procedure sections
in ETSU Spectrum, ETSU Undergraduate and Graduate catalogs).
Complaint procedures are described as follows:

Students with complaints about academic issues are directed to
contact the ETSU Director of Undergraduate Advisement, who serves
as a representative of the provost for academic complaints from either
undergraduate or graduate students.

Students with complaints pertaining to the offices of admissions,
financial aid, or the registrar are to provide a written statement
to the vice provost for academic affairs.

Students with general complaints about university policies, procedures,
or personnel are asked to submit their complaints in writing to the
dean of students.

Student complaints concerning sexual, racial, disability, or other
harassment are to be filed with the director of equal employment opportunity/affirmative
action.
Campus post office box and office addresses are listed
for the contact individual for each type of complaint. Because of the
sensitive and confidential nature of student complaints, documentation
for each complaint is maintained in the office where the student submitted
it. Confidential complaint information is shared with other offices only
on a "need-to-know" basis. Upon request, the institutional complaint
procedures will be forwarded to the SACS Commission on Colleges.
