Young Ambassadors Visit ETSU |
|||
The Tennessee members of the
Youth Ambassadors program, recently visited the
ETSU campus and toured some of the Department's lab facilities. Maria Costa of ETSU's
Office of International Programs & Services accompanied
the five Brazilian high school students and their chaperone, Dr. Maria Regina Marques Marinho,

| Mr. Sheldon Davis, a Master's degree candidate in the ETSU Department of Technology & Geomatics
was selected to recieve the
Society of Manufacturing Engineers' (SME)
Platinum Poster Award at the SME Professional Development Conference held October, 15, 2005, in Memphis Tennessee.
Mr. Davis won the $200 award with his poster entitled "Using Industrial Robots for Medical Test Applications."
In the presentation, Mr. Davis showcased how ETSU Department of Technology and Geomatics'
new rapid prototyping technologies
can be used to quickly develop an optimized robotic gripper for handling test tubes. |

Sam Shafer Wins Research Grant Award |
|||
| Sam P. Shafer, has been awarded a $900 grant in the ETSU
Honors College's
very competitive Student-Faculty Collaborative Grant program to develop a production mold
assembly for a Lumbar Punch Procedures Clinical Trainer. Mr. Shafer is working with
Dr. Martin Eason, an Assistant Professor in the
Quillen College of Medicine Office of Academic Affairs and
Mr. William (Bill) Hemphill, Assistant Professor involved in the department's
Manufacturing and
Industrial programs. In this applied research project, Mr. Shafer is currently developing a specially oriented, two-piece silicone mold suitable for casting model lumbar spines. A first generation lumbar spine has been cast for mating with simulated skin and tissue (ETSU COM developed) for a realistic clinical trainer that will be used in the clinical instruction and evaluation of commonly used but difficult and potentially dangerous lumbar puncture procedures. |

Manufacturing Graduate, Robert Vlcek, Donates Four Cherry Humidors |

Above, Mr. Robert Vlcek presents a humidor to Dr. Stanton after the May 2006 graduation ceremonies. (Click inside picture for a larger image.) Mr. Robert Vlcek, a May 2006 Manufacturing Engineering Technology graduate, donated the four cherry humidors he designed and built as part of an independent study project to the University for fund-raising purposes. One of the humidors, presented to Dr. Paul Stanton after the graduation ceremony, was donated to the University for use in President's residence, Shelbridge. The other three humidors will be used to raise money for the wood technologies and machine tool labs in Wilson-Wallis Hall where he built the humidors. The maple inlay of the ETSU Buccaneer logo was cut using the department's AXYZ CNC router. Throughout the term, Mr. Vlcek was assisted by another undergraduate student, Mr. Sam Shafer, who joined Mr. Vlcek in the presentation. ![]() |
