East Tennessee State University is conducting
workshops through its Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) for adults who would
like information and assistance in obtaining a GED diploma or a two-year or
four-year college degree.
The workshops will be held at ETSU at Bristol, 1227 Volunteer Parkway, on
Thursday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. and on Thursday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. The events are
free and require no pre-registration.
The EOC works to encourage the pursuit of post-secondary education among adults
in Carter, Johnson, Greene, Hawkins, Sullivan, Washington, and Unicoi counties
in Tennessee and in Scott and Washington counties (including the city of
Bristol) in Virginia.
Through a $226,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education and a $5,000
commitment from ETSU, the program offers information on financial assistance,
educational opportunities, and careers. Counselors provide academic advising;
assistance in completing applications for college admissions, testing, and
financial aid; coordination with local post-secondary institutions; and
referrals to appropriate organizations.
