Carla Warner began working at ETSU in the winter of 1986 as a temporary full-time staff member in the ETSU Counseling Center.  After a year of temporary work, she became the full-time permanent Counselor for the Office of Student Support Services.  During her seven years of tenure as Counselor, she earned an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration and in 1992 began working as the Director of the Center for Adult Programs and Services (CAPS).  The CAPS office is now known as Adult Commuter & Transfer services (ACTS) in an effort to convey the variety of student populations that the office serves – adult students, transfer students and commuting students.

Carla notes that looking back at her work experience, it is clear that education, particularly adult education, has been her life’s work.  Upon completing her Masters Degree from the University of Nebraska in Adult & Continuing Education, she began to seek positions where she could help adult students succeed in reaching their academic goals.  She loves her work and finds it continuously challenging and personally fulfilling.  The adult students she meets at ETSU continually inspire her and reinforce the importance of advocating for this student population.  In addition, she works with a great staff team within her immediate office as well as the larger team of faculty, staff and graduate students who comprise the Advisement, Resources and Career Center.

Carla holds a Bachelors of English degree from Western Illinois University, a Master of Arts in Adult & Continuing Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and an Ed.D. in Higher Education Administration from East Tennessee State University.  She currently serves on the following ETSU committees:  University Planning Committee, Committee on Committees, Student Affairs Council, Academic Advisement Council, Transfer Advisement Council, and Commission for Women.  She is pleased to be a member of several  honor societies:  Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society; Alpha Sigma Lambda Honor Society; Tau Sigma Honor Society; ACHE; ACPA; NASPA; and is also an active member of the ETSU Staff Senate.

Carla feels fortunate to be married to Tony Warner, an Assistant Vice President in Student Affairs and is also the mother of a fourteen year-old daughter, Mia Beth.  Carla enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering at her daughter’s school.  She enjoys music and sports events.  She firmly believes that staying active and involved in the campus and community is important – and fun!

She enjoys being a staff senator and appreciates the ability to serve in this capacity.
