About the Appalachian Research Forum

Throughout its history, East Tennessee State University has placed emphasis on research and the mission to conduct scholarship that improves the human condition.  ETSU held its first student research forum on March 8, 1985 with 19 students participating. What began as program only for the College of Medicine has expanded to become a major university-wide event which attracts more than 80 undergraduate, graduate, and medical student, resident physician, and post-doctoral fellow participants. In 2004, we expanded even further to include other institutions from the Appalachian region.

A task force of ETSU faculty members plans this annual event. Students from all fields of study have presented their work at the forum.  Many of these students have gone on to present their research findings at regional, state, and national meetings in their field.

The ETSU Student Research Forum has brought several nationally recognized individuals to campus as keynote speakers for the event.  Noted presenters include Dr. Joycelyn Elders, former U.S. Surgeon General; Dr. Michael Tucker, a leading researcher in in vitro fertilization; former NASA astronaut Dr. Rhea Seddon; and Dr. Ronald C. Desrosiers, who gained international recognition when he discovered that it is possible to vaccinate monkeys against the AIDS virus.
