Commuter Student Services:
Most of the students who attend East Tennessee
State University are commuters. Driving back and forth to
classes each day presents a unique set of challenges. Here
at Commuting Student Services we offer a number of services
to help you with your daily commute. Check out below:
Weather Policy - The policy on closing East Tennessee State University due to inclement weather states that ETSU and its branch campuses will normally remain open during bad weather. Under extreme conditions, the president of ETSU may choose to close or suspend selected activities of the university or branch campuses. The decision to close the university or to cancel some or all classes will be made and announced as soon as possible to accommodate students who must commute.
Information regarding campus closures due to inclement weather will be posted immediately on the ETSU Alert webpage as the first step in communicating the campus status to the community. The ETSU Alert System is accessible from the ETSU Homepage.
Statements of closing will also be broadcast over several area radio and television stations. We recommend listening to WETS-FM (89.5) – the university’s Public Radio station and the EDGE FM - channel 13
on the ETSU cable network will broadcast weather bulletins
and school closures. Commuting students should also check
with local and state transportation authorities regarding
weather and road conditions in their areas. If you cannot
attend classes for any reason including weather, always
take the appropriate steps to make-up missed lectures and
assignments with your instructors.
Off Campus Housing - We maintain
a list of local landlords and homeowners who are renting
out their homes, condominiums and town houses. This listing
is updated at the first of every month and can be found
by going to our housing page.
Carpool - There's a
whole section of this web page dedicated to carpooling on
the ETSU campus. If you are one of those last minute folks,
this is the only way that you can be guaranteed a decent
parking place. There are two carpool lots, one of them is
right across the street from the administration building
and the other is adjacent to the education building. Pick
up your application at the A.C.T.S. office, or go to our carpool page to print
out your application. Complete the entire form and return
it to A.C.T.S. for processing. Remember that you must have
at least two people in the car at the time you park in the
carpool lots.
Parking Regulations/Times - Students and Faculty are allotted spaces around campus
to park, but there are also times designated to the areas.
They are as follows:
Carpool: 7am - 1pm (Monday - Friday
) anyone can park in these areas after 1pm
Faculty: 7am - 3:30pm (Monday
- Friday) anyone can park in
these areas after 3:30 pm
Faculty (Lot 23): 7am -
4:30pm (Monday - Friday) anyone
can park in these areas after 4:30 pm
Students: park in designated
student parking at any time* students
may also park in the above sections as times are stated
Jumper Cables & Ice Scrapers - If you forget to turn your lights off and your automobile
battery runs down, you can drop by A.C.T.S. or Public Safety
to borrow jumper cables. In the winter instead of using
your ID or your drivers license to scrape the ice and snow
off of your windshield, use one of our handy ice scrapers,
they work well and best of all, they're free for the asking!
Maps, Bus Schedules & other good
stuff for commuters - We maintain a large resource
area right in front of our reception desk. (We're located
on the second floor of the D.P. Culp University Center right
next to the Bookstore in the ARC). In our resource area
you can find maps of the campus, the Tri-Cities area, bus
schedules for the Johnson City Transit System and map
schedules for the JCT
Bucshot shuttle services. The JCT Bucshot services have
added an
after hours service to local area attractions like the
Reel to Reel Movie Theatres and Walmart.
