Leadership House

Based on the ideals of servant-leadership, the House was founded in the Fall of 2000. ETSU Leadership House is composed of 32 students who meet weekly to discuss, listen, reflect, and collaborate. They challenge each other to gain leadership skills in a close-knit community environment. Residency in the House (BucRidge Apartments) is required and open to male and female students of all majors and classifications. Students have a one-year minimum commitment of participation. There is a $25 fee per semester.

Servant Leadership

What is servant leadership?
Servant Leadership is a practical philosophy supporting those who choose to lead as a way of serving individuals and institutions. Members focus on leadership through a group study of the 10 characteristics of servant leadership: listening, persuasion, building community, conceptualization, awareness, healing, stewardship, empathy, foresight, and commitment to the growth of people.

Comprehending the definition of servant leadership and determining its relevance in our lives is a journey. Together students engage in activities that guide their progress and growth as servant leaders.

First written about by Robert Greenleaf, an internationally known business leader in the field of communications technology in the 1960s through 80s, this philosophy has an international following of many Fortune 500 Companies as evidenced through the work of the Greenleaf Center in Indianapolis, Indiana (www.greenleaf.org).

The Best Test of Servant Leadership

“Do those served grow as persons; do they, while being served, become healthier, wiser, freer, more autonomous, more likely themselves to become servants?”

-- Robert K. Greenleaf
