What is a
Living-Learning Community?
Being a part of a living-learning
community provides a climate of academic excellence. In a
learning community, faculty and students come together to
explore and share common interests, educational experiences, and
career directions. Faculty and students engage in hands-on
learning experiences, special mentoring, and build a deeper
understanding of the shared special interest area. By
participating in campus life together, the student members
create a support group for the collegiate experience and
friendships for life. Leadership House is the first
living-learning community established at ETSU and was created in
the fall of 2000.
Many campuses have created learning
communities of various types, sizes and themes. Leadership House
is a strong program because of the commitment of the faculty and
staff, the strength of the leadership curriculum, the ownership
of the program by the student participants, and the “just right”
size of the program. Students have an opportunity for individual
attention through leadership roles in the House, coaching and
mentoring, and community opportunities in service and
leadership. ETSU’s Leadership House is an interactive community
in every sense of the word.
