Service-Learning Course Options

Introduction to Service-Learning(SRVL 1020) & Advanced Service-Learning(SRVL 2000):

The Introduction to Service-Learning and Advanced Service-Learning courses offer students a more in-depth look at community needs while providing a service placement to work on those issues. Service-learners often tutor school children, build community gardens, provide care or companionship for the elderly, educate the community on subjects such as drug and alcohol awareness, or become advocates for victims of domestic violence or child abuse.

· Experiential, values-based courses that meet oral- and writing- intensive    requirements and are course options that meet the Academic Core Area of    Familiarity in Identity, Ethics, and Social Responsibility

Disciplines that offer courses with service options integrated into the syllabus:

Like many college students across the country, ETSU students enroll in courses with service components across the disciplines. For example, students enrolled in a Children's Literature course utilize and develop their storytelling skills and knowledge of class readings in area classrooms, after-school programs, and day-care centers. An option in a Spanish class might be to provide ESL (English as a second language) tutoring to local migrant workers and their families. The Assistant Director for Service-Learning assists students and faculty in selecting sites relevant to each course.

· A variety of disciplines (English, Sociology, Education, Medicine, Foreign    Language, Criminal Justice, and many others.)
· Generally a 10 hour service commitment
· Grades and other requirements integrated in overall course.
