In seeking help with ADD, is a diagnosis from an off-campus doctor required? If you want to receive accommodations for ADD, then you must provide The Office of Disability Services with documentation that substantiates a diagnosis of ADD. Appropriate documentation includes an assessment completed by a licensed mental health clinician. Assessments involve taking a series of appropriate tests that will establish support for an ADD diagnosis as well as being interviewed by the clinician. Most people who received ADD accommodations as a child have undergone such an assessment and will just need to update the material. If you have never been tested for ADD or have very old, outdated material, then you will need to seek additional testing. The Office of Disability Services, located on the outside of the Culp Center near the post office entrance, has a list of local professionals who provide that service. Their number is 439-8346. If you are seeking therapy and/or medicine for the treatment of ADD, then Counseling Center is the appropriate place to come. We do not provide testing but we can help you discover coping skills by which to handle your ADD. If you want to receive medication services from the Counseling Center, then you must provide an assessment demonstrating that you were tested and received a diagnosis for ADD. If you would like additional information, you can call the Counseling Center at 439-4841 or you can come by our office (3rd floor Culp Center) during our walk-in intake hours which are 10-12 and 2-4, Monday through Thursday. I was given a very strong pain killer last fall by a dentist and I am having a hard time getting anything done. I can't concentrate or get moving. I need a slave driver or tutor who will get me going. Do you guys have any service like that available? We don’t really have slave drivers or tutors at the Counseling Center, but we would like to meet with you and help you determine what type of assistance would be most beneficial and would help you get your motivation, energy, and concentration back. If you are an ETSU student you can come to see us on the third floor of the Culp Center during our walk-in intake hours, Monday through Thursday 10-12 and 2-4, or you can call us at 439-4841 to set up an intake appointment. |
