Special Initiatives

Make a Difference Day

The last Saturday of October is nationally known as Make a Difference Day. Although part of the ETSU Fall Break Weekend, students have historically committed to serve in the community on this day. Several one-day projects are planned in the region. Individual students as well as classes and student organizations are invited to join with community members to work side-by-side. Projects have included:

· Building community gardens
· Park clean-ups
· Development of local historic sites
· Beautifying local schools

Contact SLLinfo@etsu.edu to know more about the projects planned for this fall.

Martin Luther King Day of Service

Beginning on the holiday celebrating King’s birthday, ETSU students engage in a week-long celebration of service to others. Holding to King’s words of “Everyone can be great because everyone can serve,” students have built playgrounds at after-school programs, homework labs for Housing Authority Neighborhood Centers, MLK Celebrations on campus and in the community, and held book drives for children’s libraries. ETSU has twice been selected in national competition for grant funds to support these service initiatives.
