What is an East Tennessee State University ID BUC$
Card?
The ETSU ID BUC$ Card features a declining balance program that works
exactly like using a regular credit card, ONLY IN REVERSE! The difference
is -- you deposit the money in the account prior to spending it. Upon
receipt of your money, an account is set up especially for your use with
your identification card. The card reader will record the transaction
and instantly display the remaining balance of your account. To make a
purchase at any of the participating locations, simply present your ID
BUC$ Card to the cashier.
What are the three door locking system in use on campus?
ETSU Door
Locking Security Systems
The ETSU campus has three door locking security plans. They are:
1.
Key System – this door lock and key system is
managed by the Key Control Shop in the University Physical Plant. These keys are issued to individuals only
after they have been specifically authorized to have the key. This authorization is requested in writing,
on the proper Key Control form, with signatures by the appropriate Dean or
Director.
2.
Onity Interior Door System – The system of
stand-alone, electronic interior door locks use the Campus ID System card to
gain access to the door. The locks are
individually programmed to accept certain encodings on individual ID
cards. These types of locks are easily
recognized by the fact that they require the actual insertion of the card into
the actual door handle mechanism. These
are similar to the locks commonly found in hotels.
Each card must
be specifically encoded at the Campus ID System Office. This encoding is done only after it has been
specifically requested and authorized with the appropriate Dean/Director or
campus Department of Housing official.
These forms are available on this web site or from the Campus ID System
Office. [Note: this system is also in
use on a few exterior doors but is primarily for interior doors.]
3.
CBORD Exterior Door System – This system of
networked, on-line electronic exterior door locks use the Campus ID System card
to gain access to the door. The locks
are programmed and managed through a campus networked computer system by the
Campus ID System Office and the Department of Housing and Residence Life. These
types of locks are easily recognized by the fact that they are accessed by a
separate card reader placed on the wall near the door.
The system uses
the campus ID number encoded on the card when it was issued to allow entrance
to those locations where the number has been approved for entrance. Access to these system locks is granted
only after it has been specifically requested and authorized with the
appropriate Dean or Director. These
forms are available on this web site or from the Campus ID System Office.
In
using these three systems it is important to understand that they are three
independent systems with no relationship or connectivity between them. Door access using any of the three systems will
require separate authorizations for each door on each system.
If you have questions about the
systems or how to gain access to a door locked by one of the systems, please
contact either the Physical Plant Key Control Office or the Campus ID System
Office.
Why should I use the debit card options on my ID?

- Almost any transaction on campus can be taken care of with your ID card
- food, books, vending, laundry, etc.

Who Can Participate and How?
All students, faculty and staff enrolled or employed at East Tennessee
State University are eligible to participate in the ID BUC$ Program. To
activate the declining balance features of your card, simply complete,
sign, and return the proper form with a cashier's check, money order,
or personal check for the amount you wish to place in an account. Accounts
may also be opened by direct deposit from financial aid, payroll deduction,
or in person at the ID Card Services Office. You may open your account
with as little as $10.00.
What is the difference between a Declining Balance
or Debit Account and what I have with a credit card?
With a credit card, you charge the expenses and then must pay for them
later. This requires careful advance planning and responsible management
of the expenditures not to exceed your budget. With the ID BUC$ debit
account, you place only the funds you can afford into the account and
then spend them as you wish. There is no danger of overspending and getting
in debt -- no surprises at the end of the month!
How do I take care of my ID Card?
Treat your card as you would cash or any other valuable possession. Protect
the magnetic stripes, they can be erased by some devices such as inventory
control pads (found at many cash registers) or other strong magnetic devices.
Do not iron or otherwise expose the card to excessive heat. Do not punch
holes in the card for use with key chains or necklaces. We also ask that
you do not use any tape or stickers on the card; the tape can damage the
card readers around campus.
What if I find my old card after having a new one
made? Can I use it?
No. In order to insure the security of the meal and debit plans as well
as the residence halls, only the most recent card issued is valid. Any
previous cards are automatically invalidated on the system. If you have
an old card, it should be cut up and thrown away.
I hate my picture, can I have another one made?
Retakes, once the card is printed, are not allowed unless the picture
is unusable due to closed eyes or other similar problems. If you really
must have another ID picture made, a replacement can be obtained through
the lost ID process, with its normal replacement fee.
What is the difference in the exterior door access control system and the interior door access control system?
The campus building exterior doors, that are electronically controlled, are an online access control system using software provided by the Diebold Corporation. Access to these doors can be given, by the appropriate authority, by merely authorizing it in the software. The interior doors around campus, that are electronically controlled, are an off-line access control system using software provide by the Onity Corporation. Access to these doors can be given, by the appropriate authority, only by actually encoding authorization for a particular door on the magnetic stripe on the back of the card. Thus there are two seperate systems used on campus to allow access to electronically controlled doors.
What's the difference between an ID Card and a Name Badge?
Your ID card is the one with the ID number on it and the Library bar code on it. It is to be used for financial transactions, door access, and all other ID system services and priveleges. It should be carried with you at all times and should NOT have holes punched in it. Selected students, staff, and faculty on campus also have Name Badeges with their name, title, and department printed on the card. The card is also punched and has a 'hanger clip' on it that allows it to be worn on clothing. This is the only purpose for this card, it cannot be used to access any other ID System service or privelege.
