What is the summer
institute all about?
Summer Institutes are the cornerstone of the TFFC Teaching American
History Project, bringing together a group of highly motivated and
dedicated teaching professionals for a week of intensive study in
one Era of the Tennessee State curriculum framework. This week is
designed specifically for American History teachers in East
Tennessee, integrating historic content, primary source evaluation,
research, technology and field study to refresh and improve
classroom practice.
This group of teachers will develop both specific
lesson plans and general practice in teaching history. Under the
leadership of Dr. Andrew Slap, each week will feature a variety of
experiences and speakers to reinforce the Eras of Study. All
activities are structured around Tennessee curriculum standards and
aim to provide insight into the material teachers are required to
teach.

What is Required of All Summer Institute
Participants
-
Attendance at the Orientation Session and all 5
days of study, including any overnight stays necessary for field
experience.

Production of 3 original lesson plans that reflect
knowledge gained during the Institute.

Completion of a Pre/Post Content Assessment
-
Reflective journaling
-
Reading selected materials before attending
Requirements to Earn 3 Hours of Graduate Credit
in History
-
Complete all above listed requirements.

Successfully produce a total of 5 original lesson
plans or 1 Unit that will be evaluated by project staff using a
rubric you will receive in advance.

Work must be completed in early August to receive
credit for the summer session.
