In it's early days, Gilbreath Hall was fronted by a wide expanse of lawn. Under Gilbreath's leadership, the school grew from 150 students when it opened in October 1911 to 1,387 students in 1924-25. He also successfully pursued elevating the Normal School from a "teacher-training institute" to a full four-year teachers college.
