Then: Female students gather in Carter Hall's commons area

The shared commons area in Carter Hall served as a gathering place for female residents. The first campus residence hall is named for Mayetta Wilkinson Carter, wife of the railroad and business magnate whose donation of 120 acres helped ensure that the East Tennessee State Normal School would be established in Johnson City.
