GOVERNMENTAL RELATIONS

     The Office of the President is primarily responsible for governmental relations at the local, state and federal levels.  University Relations plays a supporting role by providing background information for governmental officials on issues that affect the campus, by coordinating the flow of information about the university to these representatives and by preparing annual needs lists for submission to the Northeast Tennessee legislative delegation.
     ETSU has a responsibility to keep our legislators well-informed about campus issues and needs.  However, "lobbying" is not permissible.  Garnering support for or opposition to particular bills in the Legislature is the responsibility of the Board of Regents.
     Before contacting any government official and expressing an institutional position about an issue or bill, ETSU faculty and staff are urged to contact the President's Office.  Likewise, before any invitations are extended for government officials to appear on campus, these must be cleared by the Office of the President.
     University Relations maintains an up-to-date mailing list of local government officials (mayors, city managers, county executives), senators, representatives in Congress, and state legislators.  A list of members of the Northeast Tennessee legislative delegation appears below:
