The Office of the President is primarily responsible
for governmental relations at the local, state and federal levels.
University Relations plays a supporting role by providing background information
for governmental officials on issues that affect the campus, by coordinating
the flow of information about the university to these representatives and
by preparing annual needs lists for submission to the Northeast Tennessee
legislative delegation.
ETSU has a responsibility to keep our legislators
well-informed about campus issues and needs. However, "lobbying"
is not permissible. Garnering support for or opposition to particular
bills in the Legislature is the responsibility of the Board of Regents.
Before contacting any government official
and expressing an institutional position about an issue or bill, ETSU faculty
and staff are urged to contact the President's Office. Likewise,
before any invitations are extended for government officials to appear
on campus, these must be cleared by the Office of the President.
University Relations maintains an up-to-date
mailing list of local government officials (mayors, city managers, county
executives), senators, representatives in Congress, and state legislators.
