If the seal, logo, mascots or other university symbols will be used in an unaltered state consistent with the guidelines in this document by a university department or in relation to an official university event, then no advance approval for such use is required.
However, any alterations being considered in the use or presentation of the logo, mascots or other university symbols must be approved by the Office of University Relations. The seal may not be altered in any way.
If a registered university student organization wishes to sell or give away items incorporating the seal, logo, mascots or other university symbols on them, the organization must request approval by sending a letter to the Student Activities Center explaining in detail the proposed use and distribution.
The university's licensing program, coordinated
through the Licensing Resource Group in Iowa City, Iowa, sets standards
for the commercial use of its trademarks, logos and designs. Organizations
outside the university, both non-profit and for-profit, desiring to use
the seal, logo, athletic mascots or other university symbols on any item
should request approval for such use by contacting the University Relations
Office. This process is required whether the item is to be sold or
given away.
