Section 10
Policy Statement

A uniform policy describing the proper use of East Tennessee State University's seal, logo, colors, flag and mascots has long been a goal of the campus community.  With the adoption of the mountain logo and the official return to the original school colors of Navy Blue and Old Gold, it is appropriate that ETSU publish such a policy.

Please note that the publication of this guide is not intended as a signal to discard existing stocks of stationery, business cards or other materials.  Current supplies should be depleted before switching.

Following these guidelines will result in a consistent visual image that represents East Tennessee State University in the best way possible.

This section was originally compiled by the ETSU Aesthetics and Heritage Committee.

General Guidelines

East Tennessee State University representations, including the seal, logo and athletic mascot designs, are registered trademarks with the State of Tennessee.  Registration of these indicia provides protection against the manufacture, use, display or sale of imitations of any of these items without the consent of ETSU.

If the seal, logo, mascots or other university symbols will be used in an unaltered state consistent with the guidelines in this document by a university department or in relation to an official university event, then no advance approval for such use is required.

However, any alterations being considered in the use or presentation of the logo, mascots or other university symbols must be approved by the Office of University Relations.  The seal may not be altered in any way.

If a registered university student organization wishes to sell or give away items incorporating the seal, logo, mascots or other university symbols on them, the organization must request approval by sending a letter to the Student Activities Center explaining in detail the proposed use and distribution.

The university's licensing program, coordinated through the Licensing Resource Group in Iowa City, Iowa, sets standards for the commercial use of its trademarks, logos and designs.  Organizations outside the university, both non-profit and for-profit, desiring to use the seal, logo, athletic mascots or other university symbols on any item should request approval for such use by contacting the University Relations Office.  This process is required whether the item is to be sold or given away.
