The ETSU Photo Lab is a division of the Office
of University Relations. Our staff consists of two photographers
who conduct all photographic, darkroom, administrative and clerical procedures;
three student workers; and one temporary employee who assists with yearbook
portraits.
Most of the Photo Lab's services are available
at no charge to the department for university-funded publications, presentations,
displays, etc. If color enlargements are needed, the department is
charged the actual cost of the finished prints. Black-and-white enlargements
of photographs on file are currently available for individuals to purchase.
PHOTOGRAPHIC COVERAGE OF UNIVERSITY EVENTS
Many activities on the ETSU campus are routinely
covered by our photographers. Departments requiring the service of
our photographers should contact the Photo Lab at 439- 6137 or -4357 as
soon as possible but no later than two weeks before the scheduled event.
At least three weeks notice should be given for events that take place
after regular university work hours (8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.) or on weekends.
Information should be provided as to where the photographs will be published
or displayed. It should be clear whether black-and-white or color
photographs are needed; if the photographs are for a university publication,
the University Press should be consulted first to determine if color or
black-and-white images will be used in the publication.
AUDIO VISUAL PRESENTATIONS
Slide shows and other presentations need to be
planned several months in advance of the anticipated showing date.
Major presentations involve several departments within University Relations,
which currently produces one or two of these each year that highlight the
entire university. We are now able to produce presentations on computer,
which we can convert to video for a wide variety of uses.
DEPARTMENTAL BROCHURES
Departmental brochures should begin with the University
Press. We need a good idea of the type of photographs to be used
and how the final product will look. At this point, a person should
be assigned to work with the photographer in setting up the photos and
securing appropriate model releases of the subjects.
DEPARTMENTAL DISPLAYS
Several departments currently have displays they
use for various events. These are normally produced in color.
Prints for these may be obtained from our stock file, or new photographs
may be made to highlight an individual program or activity. Several
months should be allowed to properly prepare this type of display.
Departments will be charged for any color printing that is necessary.
YEARBOOK PORTRAITS
Yearbook portraits are taken during September
and October each year and involve one photographer, a temporary employee
and student workers. We will make every attempt to continue other
routine assignments; however, normal processing time (see "Normal Processing
Time" later in this section) on delivery of finished prints may be longer.
The yearbook uses photographs of faculty and staff that are on file in
the Photo Lab, so it is a good idea to have an updated photograph on file.
PHOTOS OF FACULTY AND STAFF
Portraits of faculty and staff are kept on file
in the Photo Lab for use with news releases on position appointments, major
achievements and other occasions; for the yearbook; and for various additional
uses.
The Photo Lab normally sets aside the following dates each month
for studio portraits: the second Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. and the following
Wednesday from 1-3 p.m. If you would like to update your current
photo or do not have one on file in the Photo Lab, we will be glad to take
a new portrait during these times. Please call for an appointment,
which should take five to 10 minutes.
SPECIAL DEPARTMENTAL NEEDS
Your department may have a special need for photographs,
which the Photo Lab may help you produce. Please contact our office
to discuss any photographic need you have, and we can go from there.
WORLD WIDE WEB PAGES
Several departments already have home pages on
the World Wide Web, and we are available to help provide photographs for
this purpose. If you have access to the Web, check the ETSU home
page to see how other departments have used this service.
NORMAL PROCESSING TIME
Please allow two weeks for finished black-and-white
photographs and three to four weeks for color processing. We normally
shoot extra photos at each assignment and will provide a contact print
for selections to be chosen. Processing time often increases when
a large number of photos are ordered. All of our prints are custom
hand-printed (as opposed to a machine or one- hour printer) and are burned
and dodged as needed. This process is not immediate, but it gives
us the quality necessary for publishing.
WHAT IF A PHOTOGRAPHER IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR MY EVENT?
Please try to limit requests to those that require
a professional photographer. We do not normally photograph receptions,
birthday parties, scrapbook opportunities or other activities that will
not appear in university publications. We do have an easy-to-operate
35mm camera that may be checked out for these events or if a photographer
is not available.
